What Is DCA? Dollar-Cost Averaging Explained With a Real Example
Every month, on the 5th, ₹5,000 leaves my bank account and becomes Bitcoin. I do not check the price first. I do not wait for a dip. I do not read three articles about where the market is heading. That is dollar-cost averaging — DCA — and it is less a strategy than a way of refusing to play a game most people lose: timing the market.
DCA means investing a fixed amount at regular intervals, whatever the price. When the price is high, your ₹5,000 buys less. When it is low, it buys more. Over time, your average cost smooths out. You will never buy everything at the bottom. You will also never put your whole savings in on the worst day of the year. For most people, that trade is worth it.
One example, six months, real numbers
| Month | Bitcoin price (₹) | ₹5,000 buys |
|---|---|---|
| January | 8,000,000 | 0.000625 BTC |
| February | 7,000,000 | 0.000714 BTC |
| March | 9,500,000 | 0.000526 BTC |
| April | 6,500,000 | 0.000769 BTC |
| May | 8,500,000 | 0.000588 BTC |
| June | 10,000,000 | 0.000500 BTC |
| Total | — | 0.003722 BTC for ₹30,000 |
Average cost per coin: about ₹8,059,000. The person who bought everything in March at ₹9,500,000 paid nearly 18% more per coin. The person who waited for the April low and missed it entirely is still waiting. DCA does not beat every possible outcome — it beats the ones that depend on luck.
Setting up a DCA plan that survives a bad month
- Pick an amount you will not miss. ₹2,000, ₹5,000, ₹10,000 a month — whatever leaves your rent, EMI and emergency fund untouched.
- Pick a day and automate it. The 1st or 5th, right after salary. If you have to decide each time, you will skip the months when it matters most.
- Choose one or two coins, not ten. Spreading ₹5,000 across eight coins means fees eat you alive and you learn nothing.
- Decide the review date in advance. Look at it after 12 months, not after every red day. Rebalance or stop only on a date you chose calmly.
What DCA does not do
It does not guarantee a profit. If a coin falls 80% and never recovers, averaging in simply loses money more slowly. It does not replace research: DCA into a worthless coin is still a bad idea, done patiently. And it does not remove tax — in India, every sale is taxed at 30% on gains, with 1% TDS on trades, even if you bought in small slices. Keep records from day one; your future self, filing taxes, will be grateful.
Who DCA suits — and who it does not
It suits a salaried person who wants exposure to crypto without watching charts at work. It does not suit someone who needs the money back in three months, or someone who enjoys trading and has the time and discipline for it. Be honest about which one you are. The plan that fits your life is the one you will actually follow.
Author note: My own DCA started during a market fall, and for four straight months every buy was “in the red”. It felt pointless — until the fifth month, when the average I had built quietly started working in my favour.
